The influences of Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Clifford Brown, and Dizzy Gillespie weighed heavily as Bruce learned the fundamentals of jazz. As a junior in high school, Bruce was honored to perform in the "Essentially Ellington" jazz band competition sharing the stage with his friend and mentor, Wynton Marsalis.
