The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) beat Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) into 3rd place in Sunday's regional election in the eastern state of Thuringia. Linke won 29.7%, AfD won 23.8% and CDU won 22.5%.
The AfD started in 2014, and has become an anti-immigrant party following the 2015 refugee crisis.
