Both China and Japan treasure the traditions of calligraphy and classic ink-wash paintings, which continue to thrive through art made by young children and youths.

A 10-meter-long hand scroll featuring ink-wash paintings and calligraphy by Chinese and Japanese youths was unveiled in Beijing on Sunday. Titled A Shared Home, the joint work was created by some of the award winners of the First Sino-Japanese Youths' Ink Painting and Calligraphy competition and was presented at the awarding ceremony.

Held by People's China magazine, under China International Publishing Group, the competition honored dozens of artists between 6 and 22 years of age from the two countries. Selected works from the competition will be exhibited in Japan from Jan 13 to 19, and Chinese winners will also be there for cultural exchanges with their Japanese peers.

The competition will be held next year by the youth exchange center of Shaanxi province.
