To welcome the upcoming Chinese New Year, a woodblock prints exhibition, co-hosted by the China Cultural Center in Sydney and the National Art Museum of China, opened online last Wednesday on the official website of the cultural center.

Woodblock prints during the Chinese New Year are one of the most popular forms of artwork among Chinese families. The tradition originated with the paintings of ancient doorkeepers, and is believed to repel evil when posted on the door of a home. At the same time, the painting can decorate the house, bringing happiness and joy to the family.

The collection of 20 prints on display were all created in Yangliuqing of Tianjin, a renowned center of Chinese woodblock prints since the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). With a unique artistic style, the paintings became popular around the capital area.

The online exhibition will run through the Spring Festival, delivering New Year greetings overseas.
