With more than 90 percent of its surface area being mountains and hills, Guizhou province is among the hardest places to develop a sound transport system, and for hundreds of years has been among the poorest regions in China.

But now the province is home to nearly half of the world's 100 highest bridges and its total expressway mileage has nearly quadrupled over the past decade.
