Love, Death and Robots, Shenzhen-style
An original dance drama, titled AI in Love, was staged at Beijing's National Center for the Performing Arts between Aug 25 and 27.
Exploring the relationship between humanity and artificial intelligence, it tells the story of Xiaohai, who loses his mother in an accident as a child, and grows up in the company of AI robots.
"I have been intrigued by the fast development of artificial intelligence and the discussions about how it affects peoples' lives, as well as the conflicts and challenges humans may face as a result," said the show's director, veteran choreographer Tong Ruirui, who appeared at the NCPA for a lecture before the first show on Aug 25 together with his team.
"As we face an unpredictable future, the idea of how can we get along with AI made me think," Tong said.
He added that the show was commissioned by the Shenzhen government, and premiered in Shenzhen in March.
"The city is home to many technology companies and talents. This makes the dance drama special," Tong said.
Featuring robots and naked-eye 3D LED displays, the show incorporates street dancing and electronic music, and the dancers swap between human and robot roles.
"AI in Love is a new experience for me because I have to dance like a robot to express my character's feelings, which was a challenge," said Qin Xi, who plays one of the robots.
