Over 400 student delegates from 52 secondary schools across China gathered at Shanghai Foreign Language School (SFLS) Affiliated to Shanghai International Studies University for the MUNUC-SFLS Model United Nations Conference 2023, which started on Thursday.

This year's four-day event covers several pressing global issues, including weaponization of artificial intelligence, equal access to education, and mental health in developing countries.

"MUN provides Chinese youth with a deeper understanding of the world and prepares them for global engagement," said Du Yuehua, principal of SFLS. "We hope that they will not only broaden their global perspectives but also develop all-encompassing abilities in terms of global leadership and intercultural communication."

Among the students attending the event is 12-year-old Ni Ruiqi from Olive Tree International Academy, BFSU. Ni, the youngest participant in the conference, is representing the Dominican Republic and is part of the committee on environmental governance in the age of climate change.

"Although our viewpoints may differ, we are all trying to find a solution. It is also possible to ask other countries for help in resolving a problem together. It's never a zero-sum game," said Ni.

SFLS, which offers 10 foreign language programs, has since its inception been committed to developing students who are well-rounded and globally competitive. In 2019, SFLS and the University of Chicago established a partnership.

SFLS has hosted numerous national and international MUN conferences since 2013.
