Singing competition celebrates musical talent of elderly participants
The China Association of the University for the Aged and the Guo Lanying Arts Development Foundation launched a singing competition for senior citizens in Beijing on June 17. Scheduled from July 1 to Oct 15, the competition welcomes participants aged 55 and above, with categories tailored to different age groups: 55 to 77, 63 to 70, 71 to 77, and 78 and older.
Contestants will have the opportunity to showcase their vocal prowess through solo performances, duets, and choral singing across a range of musical genres including pop, folk, and bel canto. Renowned Chinese singer Guo Lanying, a household name in the country, will assume the role of artistic director for the competition, adding prestige and expertise to the event.
Culminating in a grand gala on Oct 11 to commemorate the Double Ninth Festival, a traditional Chinese occasion honoring senior citizens on the ninth day of the ninth month in the lunar calendar, this competition not only celebrates musical talent but also pays homage to the cultural significance of the festival for the elderly.
