China saw a 25.8 percent year-on-year decrease of gun and explosive-related criminal cases in the first 10 months of 2024, the Ministry of Public Security said on Thursday.

This year, police across the country have cracked 19,000 gun and explosive-related cases, dismantling 54 organizations and 237 hideouts, Qi Xiguo, deputy head of the ministry's public security management bureau said at a news conference.

In 2023, the ministry and other departments launched a three-year special campaign to crack down on gun and explosive-related offenses, Qi said, noting that China has become one of the countries that have the lowest rate of gun and explosive-related violence.

Recently, as required by the ministry, police across the country held 140 events to display and destroy more than 88,000 guns they had seized, according to Qi.

Zhang Tao, deputy head of the department of port control under the General Administration of Customs, said port control authorities in China have seized dozens of guns and more than 4,300 gun parts during entry-exit procedures in the first 10 months of this year.

The customs will enhance their detection capability and strengthen collaboration with police and post authorities to crack down on the smuggling of guns and explosives into China, Zhang said.
