On Oct 1, 1984, a military parade was held in Beijing to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China. This was the first National Day military parade since it was suspended in 1959.
During the parade, Deng, then Central Military Commission chairman, saluted the army with "Greetings, comrades!" and "Comrades, you are working hard!" Officers and soldiers responded with "Greetings, leader!" and "We serve the people!"
