Nigerian militants killed 46 police officers in an ambush in the north central state of Nassarawa this week, police said on Thursday. It was not clear if the militants in Tuesday's attack were linked to Islamist sect Boko Haram, which has waged an insurgency in northern Nigeria for three years.

Bridge collapse claims 2 lives
Rescue workers on Thursday pulled a second body from the rubble of an under-construction bridge that collapsed in central Norway a day earlier, police said. The body of the victim, a construction worker, was recovered in the early morning in a mountain of debris at the accident site near the city of Trondheim, according to local police.

Karzai to let US keep 9 bases
The US can keep nine bases in Afghanistan after the scheduled 2014 NATO combat troop pullout, the country's president said on Thursday. It was the first time he has made such an offer in public. Hamid Karzai insisted on "security and economic guarantees" first.
