A Chinese remake of the 2015 hit Japanese TV series A Restaurant with Many Problems is making waves online.

The remake, titled Solaso Bistro (the name of the restaurant), examines feminism and gender discrimination through the eyes of seven women staff members in the restaurant.

The 40-episode series, which has been broadcast online since March 23, has 1.2 million views on average per episode on v.qq.com, the video-streaming site of internet giant Tencent.

Shang Na, the CEO of Lajin Pictures and the producer of Solaso Bistro, says the Chinese studio has localized the tale, which was originally written by the prestigious Japanese scriptwriter Yuji Sakamoto.

Revealing how he got the rights for the series, he says: "The Japanese copyright holders were demanding. But after multiple rounds of negotiations and handing them a detailed adaptation plan, they greenlighted the plan."

Sakamoto is loved by fans for his impressive body of work, ranging from his 1991 classic romance series Tokyo Love Story to the recent hit Quartet,

Meanwhile, the latest Chinese version features Jiao Junyan, Li Kaixin, Ye Zicheng, Lvy Xia, Zhou Yongxuan, as well as veterans Ken Tang and Liu Mintao.
