U.S. President George W. Bushset tone for the upcoming Group-20 Summit Thursday in New York saying that the summit will focus on "understanding the causes of the global crisis and developing principles for reforming our financial and regulatory systems."
在上面的報(bào)道中,set tone就是指“定下基調(diào)”,tone在這里的意思是the general atmosphere of a place or situation and the effect that it has on people(對(duì)處于某地或情境中的人們有影響的氣氛)。如:Her friendly opening speech set the tone for the whole conference.(她友好的開幕詞確定了整個(gè)會(huì)議的基調(diào)。)
Her voice has a pleasant tone. The new curtains tone in beautifully with the carpet.(與地毯的顏色非常協(xié)調(diào)),但是她今天心情可不太好,上班的時(shí)候took an angry tone with her colleagues.(帶著怒氣與同事說話),因?yàn)樽罱捎诮鹑谖C(jī),公司的市場(chǎng)狀況(tone of the market)不太好。
