The Shanghai Maritime University (SMU) was established by the Ministry of Communication in 1959. Since 2000, SMU has been mainly administered by the Shanghai Municipality and was co-constructed by the Shanghai Municipality and the Ministry of Communications.
SMU is a multi-disciplinary university encompassing such areas as engineering, management, economics, law, liberal arts and science, with special emphasis on shipping technology, economics and management. By the end of 2010, the university had two post-doctoral research stations, one first-level-discipline doctoral program, seven second-level-discipline doctoral programs, two first-level-discipline master’s degree programs, 28 second-level-discipline master’s degree programs, three specialized master’s degree programs, 43 bachelor’s degree programs and 15 associate-degree programs.
The school has a campus of 1.33 million square meters. It has over 20,000 full-time students, 14,000 undergraduates and 2,500 postgraduates. SMU prides itself on the quality of its staff. Of the over 900 full-time teachers, 110 are professors and 35 percent hold a doctorate.
The Shanghai Maritime University has cooperative and exchange projects with 50 overseas universities, international organizations and shipping and port enterprises, in such areas as educational programs, research collaborations and student exchanges.
