Many people in different parts of the world are especially interested in the meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and his US counterpart Barack Obama on the sidelines of the third Nuclear Security Summit in the Netherlands. Before the summit, Xi and Obama have met a total of four times since 2009. They had two meetings in 2013, Xi's first year as Chinese president. Additionally, before he became president, Xi met Obama on two occasions, including a meeting at the White House in 2012.

Xi calls for better ties with US

When the Chinese and US presidents met, their talks included not only world and bilateral issues, but also something about the family.

President Xi Jinping mentioned Barack Obama's wife and daughters by their first names and the US leader's mother-in-law by her surname to show respect.

"Before arriving in the Netherlands, my wife and I met and had pleasant talks with your wife Michelle, your mother-in-law Ms Robinson and daughters Malia and Sasha. "They are visiting China, and I believe theirs is an unforgettable trip," Xi told Obama in The Hague hours before the start of a nuclear summit.

Xi, Obama discuss Asia-Pacific cooperation

Beijing asked Washington to maintain an objective and fair attitude and press countries to make tangible moves to safeguard peace in the Asia-Pacific.

"The Asia-Pacific is a region that best displays shared interests of China and the United States, and the scope for bilateral cooperation is larger than the differences," Chinese President Xi Jinping said.

Obama said the US expects the two countries to establish a comprehensive partnership regarding Asia-Pacific affairs.

Xi, Obama stress economic relations

Chinese President Xi Jinping called for implementing the spirit of building new type ties with the United States in all aspects of the bilateral relationship.

Xi stressed that the economic relationship lays an important foundation for the countries' relations.

They have formed a highly complementary and interdependent economic relationship, said the Chinese president, adding that not only will cooperation between China and the United States benefit each other but also impact the global economy.

Xi told Obama that it "has been the only correct choice for both China and the US to exclude various forms of obstacles, and persist on being friends and partners".

Xi?also pledged to continue dialogue and cooperation instead of protectionism in managing trade disputes.

Obama said a cooperative US-China relationship is in the interests of the world, adding that China's rise brings with it greater responsibility.
