China shocked by CIA interrogation methods revealed in declassified documents

By Wang Qingyun (chinadaily.com.cn) Updated: 2016-06-18 00:12

China said it was "shocked" by the details of the CIA's interrogation methods disclosed in recently declassified documents, and urged the United States to reflect on its own violation of human rights.

Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying made the remarks in a daily news conference on Friday, after the Associated Press reported that the 50 documents released on Tuesday include details of the interrogation of a suspected extremist in late 2002 at a CIA detention facility in Afghanistan.

According to the AP report, the suspect, who was later found dead in his cell, was shackled to a wall in his cell in "near-freezing confinement". Spokeswoman Hua said: "China believes that every relevant party should abide by international conventions including the Geneva Convention and guarantee basic rights of prisoners."

The US has been portraying itself to be the defender of human rights, and pointing its finger at other countries' human rights condition every now and then, said Hua.

"We hope the US will reflect on itself and take real actions to eliminate its own severe violation of human rights," she said.
