Police intervene to prevent gold scam in Henan province
In a swift intervention, police in Henan province recovered over 500 grams of gold after stopping a shipment sent by a woman who had fallen victim to an investment scam.
The unusual behavior of a woman, identified by her surname Wang, at a gold shop in Xinmi, Henan, prompted suspicion when she purchased over 300,000 yuan ($42,000) worth of gold products without specifying the type, without bargaining, and requested the items be shipped out immediately, Jimu News reported. Acting on instinct, the store clerk notified the police, suspecting something was amiss.
Upon investigation, police discovered that Wang had been targeted by scammers posing as financial advisors. The scammers convinced her she had earned 600,000 yuan from an investment and instructed her to mail 500 grams of gold to facilitate the withdrawal of her funds.
Despite the police's attempts to dissuade her, Wang initially refused to believe she had been scammed, even threatening to file a complaint against the officers. However, the police remained vigilant and took action to intercept the package Wang had sent out. The package, which was still in transit, was successfully recovered, and the gold was returned.
After extensive and heartfelt persuasion from the officers, Wang finally realized the scam and expressed her gratitude for their intervention.
