Beijing prosecutors have intensified efforts to address cases involving enterprises, aiming to foster a sound business environment and maintain market order.

The Beijing People's Procuratorate reported Thursday that since the beginning of the year, prosecutors across the city have handled a total of 8,231 cases related to businesses, including 2,717 criminal cases involving data security, fraud, and other offenses.

Du Miao, an official from the Beijing People's Procuratorate, highlighted that prosecutors in Chaoyang district have handled 28 cases where individuals defrauded small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) by posing as financiers.

In Haidian and Tongzhou districts, prosecutors have also resolved cases involving hacking and unauthorized control of company computers and information systems, ensuring the protection of enterprise data security and digital interests.

For instance, between March and April 2023, a defendant surnamed Shi illegally accessed and controlled the information systems of two companies using overseas-rented servers. The companies, which primarily handled phone bill recharges, suffered economic losses exceeding 3 million yuan ($413,097) as a result of Shi's actions, according to Li Hui, a prosecutor.

Shi manipulated the systems to offer discounted phone bill services to others, resulting in substantial financial harm to the enterprises.

In November 2023, Shi was indicted for theft by prosecutors in Tongzhou district. In June 2024, he was sentenced to 14 years and six months in prison, along with a 150,000 yuan fine.

Du commended the judicial efforts in supporting the digital economy's high-quality development, noting that Beijing prosecutors have also stepped up measures to protect intellectual property rights and combat corruption within enterprises.
