The Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, which has a history of more than 1300 years, has begun being renovated.

Located in southern Xi'an, capital of Northwest China's Shaanxi province, the pagoda was first built in 652 during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907).

It is said the pagoda held sutras and figurines of the Buddha that were brought to China from India by Buddhist translator and traveler, Xuanzang.

The purpose of the renovation is to enhance the pagoda's eaves and strengthen its weathering resistance.

The pagoda will remain open to the public and its renovation is estimated to be completed by the end of September.
